Immaculate Heart in Her Hands Painting

$320.90

The Immaculate Heart in her hands, painted by hand in Cuzco, Peru.

No face or figure. Just Mary's hands cradling her own heart against the blue of her mantle. The heart is pierced by a sword and wreathed in pink roses, flames rising from the top. Gold stars are scattered across the fabric around her. It's the most intimate way to paint this devotion, and the most striking. You see her hands before you see anything else.

There is something about this composition that stops people. It's not a portrait and it's not an icon. It's a close-up, like a detail pulled from a larger painting and given its own frame.

The frame is solid wood, hand-carved and finished in gold leaf.

Every piece is one-of-a-kind. The brushwork, the color, and the carved detail on the frame. None of it is identical to the next.

Hang it in your prayer corner, your bedroom, or your living room.

The painting was done by hand in Cuzco, Peru, where artists have been making sacred art this way for almost five hundred years. The Cuzco school began in the 1500s when Spanish missionaries trained Quechua and mestizo painters to make devotional works for the new churches of the Andes. What came out of that integration was its own thing entirely. The brushwork here is refined and realistic, closer to European devotional painting than the folk style of the other Cuzco pieces, but the gold stars and the warmth of the skin still mark it as Andean.
