Immaculate Heart of Mary Painting

$278.00

Immaculate Heart of Mary, painted by hand in Cuzco, Peru.

Mary in her blue mantle scattered with gold stars, holding the Immaculate Heart in one hand and white lilies in the other. The heart is wreathed in roses and pierced by a single sword, the one Simeon promised her when he said her soul would be pierced, too. The lilies represent her purity. Every symbol in this painting has been carried by the Church for centuries, and here they're painted by hand on canvas with the kind of detail you have to see up close to believe.

The frame is solid wood, hand-carved in a baroque scroll pattern and finished in gold leaf.

Every piece is one-of-a-kind. The brushwork, the gold, and the fine detail on her face. None of it is identical to the next.

Hang her in your prayer corner, your bedroom, or your entryway.

Details

  • Frame included: 8" x 10"
  • Hand-painted on canvas by artisans in Cuzco, Peru
  • Solid wood, hand-carved frame with gold leaf finish
  • Built to hang, fitted hook on the back
  • One-of-a-kind, slight variations are part of the piece

The painting was done by hand in Cuzco, Peru, where artists have been painting the Virgin this way for almost five hundred years. The Cuzco school began in the 1500s when Spanish missionaries trained Quechua and mestizo painters to make sacred art for the new churches of the Andes. What came out of that integration was its own thing entirely. You can see it in the warmth of her face, the gold detail on her veil, and the brightness of the blue. It doesn't look like anything you'd find in a European museum or a catalog. It looks like it was made by someone who prays to her.
